Respiratory Protective Equipment to avoid exposure to Phytosanitary products

Many phytosanitary products are toxics and they can be absorbed through four different ways: the digestive system, the lungs, the skin and the mucous membrane
SIBOL provide a wide range of respiratory protective equipment against the exposure to phytosanitary products.

Nowadays there is an endless number of products industrially made to improve the agricultural production. Although its handling and use represents a potential hazard, knowing these risks and using the right protection means is the formula to avoid undesirable  dangerous situations.

What are the phytosanitary products?

The RD2163/1994, of the 4th. of November, which implement the harmonized community system of authorization to trade and use phytosanitary products, stablish the following definition.

Phytosanitary products: The active substances and preparation with one or more active sustances, presented in the way they are offered for its distribution to the users, with the aim of:

Protecting the vegetables or vegetables products against any harmful organism or avoiding its effects, as long as those sustances or preparations are not defined differently.
Having an influence in the vital process in a different way than the nutrients have.
Improving the vegetable produts perservation, as long as those substances are not subject to any special community regulation regarding perservatives.
Eliminating undesirable vegetables.
Eliminating parts of vegetables, controlling or avoiding their inadequated growing.

Risks from handling phytosanitary products

Many phytosanitary products are toxics and they can be absorbed mainly through:

digestion: when the product is consumed.
respiration: vapors that can come from the toxics substances, as well as solid or liquid particles.
skin: if any substances soak into the skin.
Mucous membranes: the contact of the toxics substances with the mucous can be very dangerous.

Among them, the most serious one is probably through digestion, while the most agresive one is through respiration and the most common one is through skin.

Personal Protective Equipment against the risks from handling phytosanitary products.

The basic rule to avoid exposure to phytosanitary products is using personal protective equipment covering as much as possible, preventing contact, inhalation and even ingestion of these products.

Choosing thet right PPE will depend on the hazard of the product, its concentration and kind of task (mixing, farming application, cleaning, etc.), which will determine the part of the body at risk (*).

Among the skin protection, there is:

Body protection

Eye protection

Respiratory Protection Equipment against exposure to phytosanitary Products

The inhalation of dust and fine drops along with gasses and vapors are the key elements in an intoxication. Because of that is essential using the right protection equipment.

We can choose between:

Positive pressure equipment

Negative pressure equipment

Positive pressure equipment or powered system

They provide a continous air flow through a fan. The air goes through one or several filters to be clean before reaching the mask, helmet or hood.

Negative pressure equipment

In this case, the air comes through the filter due to the breathing of the worker. We have different options:

Half masks: they cover nose and mouth and have one or two filters.

Full face masks: they cover the face and have a visor, besides the filters.

The filters are the key for the respiratory protection. When it comes to phytosanitary products, it is advisable in most cases to use mixed filters, in order to be protected at the same time against gases and dust.

In general terms, it must be used A/P filters against organic vapors and dust (brown + white), and B/P for acides (grey + white) (*)
